Covenant Christian School was founded in 1978. It is a non-denominational Christian co-educational day school, with over 900 students from Preschool to Year 12. Covenant works in partnership primarily with Christian parents to be an extension of the Christian home, where God is honoured and served. KEY REQUIREMENTS 

• Committed Christian  

• To maintain the science facilities across the school  

• To provide technical advice and support to the science teachers, other teachers and senior students 

• To manage and safely store chemicals within the science prep room in compliance with WHS and advise other faculties and department in the same 

• To generally support the delivery of the Science curriculum 

• Familiarity with RiskAssess and Chemwatch programs 
  
  

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

• Relevant tertiary qualifications in Chemistry or similar degree preferred. (Certificate IV in Laboratory Practices or equivalent).  

• Demonstrated experience as a Secondary Laboratory Technician in an educational science laboratory environment 

• Familiarity with Dangerous Goods regulations and safe chemical handling  

• The ability to quickly identify risks and/or hazards, ensure that laboratories operate in accordance with best practice and meet Workplace Health and Safety regulations at all times 

• Highly developed interpersonal skills and the ability to build excellent relationships with staff, students and parents 

• Exemplary organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to prioritise and manage tasks efficiently with a high degree of skill 

• Enthusiasm, flexibility and a willingness to work with a rapidly changing set of priorities  

• The ability to work collaboratively as a team member and independently 

• Ability to use Microsoft Office computer software  

• Excellent communication skills written and verbal, in particular providing advice and seeking feedback from science faculty staff members 

• A current motor vehicle driver’s licence with access to a vehicle for occasional shopping 
  
  

GENERAL DUTIES 

• Coordinates the provision of science resources, particularly ordering and maintenance of supplies, associated record keeping and the allocation of materials.  

• Performs the following in preparation for practical classes:  

• Prepare chemical solutions and other reagents, according to recognized procedures and government safety regulations.  

• Set up laboratory equipment and instrumentation  

• Clean and pack away equipment and materials after use.  

• Checks and maintains equipment and performs basic repairs where possible  

• Trials experiments where necessary  

• Prepare dissection materials  

• Maintain a safe chemical storage system in accordance with current government hazardous chemical regulations.  

• Consult with science staff regarding their needs for practical work and maintain efficient systems for use and allocation of materials.  

• Ensure an adequate supply of laboratory materials and equipment including:  

• Maintaining records of stock in hand  

• Ordering supplies  

• Checking delivery and storing appropriately  

• Stock take requirements  

• Purchasing supplies from local stores as required 

• Dispose of (or arrange for disposal of) hazardous materials according to Government guidelines 

• Advise and assist science staff with laboratory safety matters  

• Liaise with students on their equipment needs for science projects and work requirements, advising them on appropriate safety procedures.  

• Assist science staff with demonstrations and practical classes, where required.  

• Maintain general cleanliness of laboratories 
  
  

JUDGEMENT AND DECISION MAKING
Judgement and decision making will be within the ambit of the following:  

• The position is required to carry out work in accordance with the specialised methods, procedures and processes developed from previous operations. However, the position is required to improve and develop methods and techniques and applies these to new situations in order to improve the efficiency and operation of the Science area. In this respect, the Head of Science is available for guidance and advice on the process.
